Andrew if you are planning to do this LMK
The tax man just filled the hole in my credit card.
I'm seriously gonna do the tablelands in the week before easter.
Gotta be home before good friday.
For no other reason than on GF nothing is open, and the school holidays start.
So the leave day is flexible but i'm planning sunday atm.
Do 2/ 3 days up there and come home thursday at the latest.
Can jig this around to suit others, or just go and suit myself.
Will post an eoi in the loop soon.
See if we get any bites.

    Fair enuff Mick.
I've got two weeks hols at easter so am going to use some of it.

The Anzac and May day weekends are only 3 days for most folks.
This can be stretched of course!

Was thinking of doing a southern highlands run at that time.
But all the plans are open to negotiate! R.

I was going to take the Thursday and Friday off work. Get the major service done on the bike on the Thursday in Townsville and head up to Cairns on Friday.
See what happens, I'll probably end up changing my mind and go with you this time.

Hey Andrew, there's plenty of WW's up there!

When i went past the Mountain Veiw Hotel in May '09 at midday on the sunday.
There were shiney range missiles lined up the length of the front verandah!

    No worries Mick.
If we can make something work out, we will.

Gord struth, fancy going all the way to cairns then coming straight back again.
    Ok it's only 400kms from T/ville But...

Looks like there are a few plans for easter kicking around.
Atm i'm sticking to the sunday leave, i don't want to be up there on the weekend.
Rather all the WWs and other weekend traffic was off the roads for mine.

However if you are going to Cairns.
There is a motel strip along Sheridan St on the northside.
Follow the highway in to town then the highway going north.
Cairns motels are pretty price competitive, but Sat nite is Sat nite.

If you want to go play with the locals on the Gillies sunday morning, i'm sure they are up for it.
But to run the Cook on a sunny sunday morning can be really special.
Or it may be tourist lotto. *shrugs*

Persevere, the run up the "Rex Range" aka Mossman Mt Molloy Rd is a fucking beauty!
Some of it is technical, other bits are just WOT up the hill!
From the top, the run out thru Jullaten to Mt Molloy is a mixture of long sweepers thru lovely country.
    Relax after the hill climb.

Get a feed at Mt Molloy.
Then turn around and do it on the down.
    It's just as good!

Hey Rusty I'll take all of the above as good advice , don't know if i want to get mixed up with the WW too much???
Bloke I spoke to in cairns has suggested the following , Your valued opinion???

"If you go to Google Maps and cut and paste in this

    from:Cairns to:gordonvale to:malanda to:tarzali to:ravenshoe to:tumoulin QLD to:herberton to:Carrington Queensland to:evelyn to:millaa millaa to:innisfail

That would be a great ride showing off a couple of the less common used roads up here for those who like to do a mit more that just the Gillies over and over. It's not a bad ride at all and you avoid going over the same roads. Some of the roads IMO are better attacked from the opposite direction but it's still good"

My valued opinion is you do all of those roads in either direction and more than a few times !!
That's what i usually do. If you are up there for a few days you have too.

No, it's not all about the Gillies.

The thing about staying in Malanda is, you can make loops to do any combination of the above.
No i didn't Google them, i know where they are, carry the map in my head these days !

Tis fun to look at a proper map though, there is so much to do.
And a lot more than your mate suggests.

I'll set a challenge for you.
You've seen my pic of the sign saying the "highest declared road in Qld" in the ride reports.
Usually taken with a BM in the foreground. Yeah?

Find it, and get a pic of the zook in front of it.

Yes Rusty , I think I can "arrange" that pic!
I'll probably wander around like a lost sheep in fishnet stockings and high heels, till you get there anyway.
I will definately head up with a map , 1/2 the adventure is exploring right??

    Abso-bloody-lutely!
Pull out the map over a few beers at the end of the day, stick a few pins in it and go have the roads!

First time i went up there on a bike a few years ago.
We just headed up the road. Didn't know what was there.
Stayed in Cairns, next morning ran the Cook to Pt Douglas and back.
    Magic!

Ran the Kennedy to Mareeba. Having lunch looking at the map.
What about we go to Atherton, go down that road then to Innisfail and back up that road.
Mate wanted to go out thru Mt Garnet towards Undarra.
He had a rough idea, i knew bugger all about the tablelands then, just a few names.

I remember saying to 'Smurf' look it's high here on the range but low there on the coast.
There has got to be some twisty stuff.

So we rattled down this unbeleivable never ending twisty [on the old airhead then]
Pull up somewhere past the pub. Having a durrie sucked thru a split water melon grin.
    Smurf pulls up.
    What about that? I say.
    Bloody good says he.
You know what we should do now? i ask.
    What.
Turn around and go back up again!!

Found out later, that twisty was the Gillies!
And yes we should have turned around and gone back up again!

But we ran down the highway turned west at Innisfail and 'discovered' the Palmerston instead.
Never forget my first run thru that, still love it.

Fwiw Andrew if you are determined to be up there saturday nite.
    That's do-able for me.
I'm sorta hanging out to see whether there's o/t being offered on the sat at work.
If not i'll run up in my own time, but be there by beer o'clock.

    As for the sign?
I've mentioned in reports what road it is.
But not exactly where it is.

Yeah, its easy to find somewhere to ride from Cairns.
    Try north south or west.

Going east gets a bit soggy.
    Just like old sheep jokes...

Got to take chances on the weather.
As long as there is no cyclone, there's drier places to ride.

Does get a bit rainy around the southern end of the range though.
Babinda measures it's rainfall in metres...
