How many liters of luggage do you reckon you guys have?? I've plucked an abitary value of 60L as a target. I tend to think once you're away more than a week, it's all the same. Just looking on the web at different solutions, and I'm thinking a combination tank/tail bag is the go, balance the load a little.

Looking at the Nelson Rigg stuff, partly because of lifetime no hassle warrantee... seems like expandable bags each end are the go...

Jules and I use an expandable tankbag which hold my fiddly shit plus all wet weather gear , cameras and chain lube.

We can get away with only a 52 litre Ventura bag for all other stuff including a pair of shoes each.
If we use a saddle bag each the ventura bag has very little in it at the beginning of the journey....lol

So if you halve the 52L, you probably use 26L for the rest of your stuff? Even if I pack like an army guy (looking at you, TJ), I should be ok with 38L?

I have no plans to be picking up souvenirs... and I don't expect any topgear-like gift giving along the way, either.

I guess but you will need more capacity once you pack a jumper or similar.
Its better to have a slightly larger bag and not use it than need to take stuff and not have enough room.

Still suggest a tank bag in addition to your normal bag for wet weather gear etc. That way if weather looks bad you can secure your bag with your dry stuff in it and then if it does rainall you need to worry about is yourself and your wet weather bag,,

All depends how much crap you think you need , I found I could have trimmed down alot when i did the southern trip with brett.
I had a medium to large tank bag, & ventura bag on the back have no idea how many litres it is.. I know i did empty what seemed to be 20 litres of water out of it on our way back up to armadale
If I did it again I reckon I could do it with just one bag.
Does make a difference if you've got a compulsive bargain hunter on the back,eh Brett (sorry Julz)

I have to admit, I've never owned rain gear... I always just took getting wet as part of the game. Having said that, cold rain in Tassie would be a real mood killer, so it's just one more thing I have to add to the list.

Dont rely on those little plastic things that come with most jackets either.

Using that waterproof line allows your jacket to become saturated and the only thing protecting you from the wet is a thing bit of plastic on the very inside of the jacket.

Get a waterproof jacket which can go over your riding jacket ond make sure it can be drawn in at the waist, Also the style that is quite long almost to the point where you can tuck the jacket under your bum while riding. Also make sure the neck part can be fastened with your riding jacket and helmet on. I fing that I need to go up one size just so I am not choked, A flannelette or terry towling neck lining on the wp jacket also make for more comfort and less distraction from scratchy plastic or nylon.

Couple this with the weatherproof pants which come up quite hig to at least your waist. and you have very very little risk ov ending up with water gtting blown up or creeping up under the jacket.

Also keeps the wind out forming a good thermal insulating layer of warm air..

Personally, regarding tankbags, I can't use magnetic ones on the R1... The airbox cover is plastic. I'd use a clip type, and to protect paintwork, I'd look at investing in Clearshield on the tank... Magnetic bags do leave little swirly scratch marks (both my FZR 750 and 1000 suffered them)

The chamois can still leave marks when it dries out and there is dusty conditions, the anti slip matting is great, I have now cut and glued it to underneath of tankbag

Trev just saw the ideal thing for you in the classifieds..Needs a little TLC but it may be the solution for your problem. You could also build a little mezzanine in it for parts and or a mattress.

Not gone cold, just shifted to the right. I'm going os again next year, so the original timings have to be put on hold. We're still working on setting up the bikes properly, and that takes time, something we have in abundance now.
